Pricing
All prices are constants in the contract. There is no owner who could change them, and no fee switch. Nobody collects the fees either: every yearly fee goes into a deposit that stays with the page and goes back to the page’s payee when the page ends.
Yearly fee
| Name length | Per year | 14-day trial |
|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 characters | 0.01 ETH | 0.001 ETH |
| 3 or 4 characters | 0.001 ETH | 0.0001 ETH |
| 5 or more characters | 0.0001 ETH | 0.00001 ETH |
A label is plain ASCII (see the name rules), so its length in characters is its length in bytes.
Renewal costs the same yearly fee and adds 365 days to the current expiry, so renewing early loses nothing. A renewal may not put the expiry more than 3650 days ahead.
You also pay OP Mainnet gas for each transaction.
The deposit
Every yearly fee paid for a page, at registration and at each renewal, is added to the page’s deposit
(depositOf). The deposit belongs to the page, not to whoever paid it:
- It stays in the contract while the page is live and during its grace period.
- If the page moves to a new holder, the deposit stays with the page.
- If someone registers the page during its premium period, they pay the whole deposit to the last payee and take it over: it stays in the page, and their fee is added to it.
- Otherwise, once the grace period and the 21-day premium period are over, the deposit goes back to
the page’s payee. Anyone may call
release(tokenId)for that, and the next registration of the page does it first by itself.
The payee is the main address the current holder saved, or the holder itself when it saved none.
It still counts after expiry, when the page can no longer move and its main address can no longer
change. payee(tokenId) reads it.
Money the contract pays out is credited to owed(account). withdraw(account) sends an account
everything credited to it. Anyone may call it for any account, and the money always goes to that
account.
So a page costs gas, and the use of its deposit while you keep it. When you give the page up by letting it lapse, the deposit comes back.
Trials
A 14-day trial costs a tenth of the yearly fee (see the table). That money is not part of the deposit.
It is held for the account that paid it and always credited back to it: when the trial is renewed,
when anyone calls release after the trial ends, or when the page is registered again. A trial has no
grace period and no premium period. See Trials.
Grace period
When a paid page expires, it enters a 90-day grace period. During grace:
- anyone can still renew the page at the normal fee;
- the page stops answering: no address, no profile, no website, and its subpages stop too;
- it cannot move, and its records cannot change;
- nobody else can register it.
Renewing a page you do not hold is a gift: the page always stays with its holder.
The premium period
If the grace period ends without a renewal, anyone may register the page again. For the next 21 days the price has a premium on top, so a sought-after name is not taken the second it drops:
- the premium starts at 10 ETH;
- it falls in a straight line to zero over the 21 days;
- the new registrant also pays the old deposit, which goes to the last payee and stays in the page as theirs (see The deposit).
quote(label) returns the price right now: fee, carried (the deposit taken over), premium and
total. During the premium period the price only goes down, so a quote stays enough while your
transaction confirms, and anything paid above the price is sent back.
The premium is split:
- 75% goes to the last payee of the page.
- 25% goes to the payee of the referrer named at the page’s last registration. When there was no referrer, or the referrer is not a top-level page, that share goes to the dead address and is burned.
After the 21 days the price is the yearly fee alone, and the old deposit goes back to the last payee.
Referrers
A registration may name a referrer: another top-level page, passed as its token id. It is part of the commitment, so it is fixed before the reveal, and it cannot be the page itself. The referrer earns nothing at registration or renewal. It earns only the 25% share of a premium, when the page later lapses and someone registers it again during its premium period. Each registration records its own referrer.
Subpages
Creating subpages under a page you hold is free, apart from gas. Subpages have no fee and no expiry of their own; they live as long as their parent. If you buy a subpage through a subpage sale, the price is whatever the seller set, and none of it goes to the protocol.
